Standard-based Global Education Updates
Standards in Relation to Global Education
Math Common Core State Standards: Sixth Grade
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.G.A.4
Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Integration of Global Education
-Students will develop an awareness that global issues are interrelated, complex and challenging, and ever changing.
-Students will research an issue and interpret information on a global issue.
-Students can approach global issues objectively, with neither undue optimism nor unwarranted pessimism.
-Students will develop a sense of efficacy and civic responsibility by identifying specific ways that they can make a contribution to the resolution of a global issue.
Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies
SIXTH GRADE MATH
-Students will watch a video introducing the issue of malaria and how nets help save lives.
-Students will research different countries in Africa that are affected by malaria. What is the country’s population? How many malaria cases were there in 2013? How many deaths were from malaria in 2013? What are possible solutions for malaria?
-Students will discuss how nets can help prevent malaria.
-Students will calculate the surface area of different nets needed to cover different size beds/areas.
-Students will determine the number of nets needed for their population and the cost to supply that amount to the country.
Informal Outcome Assessments
-Students will complete a “think, pair, share” activity sheet finding the surface area for three different figures.
-Students will post a reflection in the class blog about their ideas on how to protect individuals from malaria.
Math Common Core State Standards: Sixth Grade
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.1
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies
SIXTH GRADE MATH
-Students will examine a set of data from the World DataBank and choose to compare three countries population to internet use and mobile cellular subscriptions.
-Students will create a line graph to compare the three countries.
-Students will write proportions to make predictions for cellular subscriptions or internet use as the population of the country increases.
Informal Outcome Assessments
-Students will create a line graph on the site http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/ comparing three countries data.
-Students will record proportions and share results with their group. Each group will share one example with the class and record on the board.
-Students will have an exit slip that asks them to write one ratio for a set of data and complete one proportion.
Math Common Core State Standards: Sixth Grade
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3.D
Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.
Integration of Global Education
-Students will engage in exchanges with another culture in a foreign nation.
-Students understand that culture and communication are closely connected.
-Students understand that there are universals connecting all cultures.
Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies
SIXTH GRADE MATH
-Students will design a floor plan of their bedroom using US Customary measurements.
-Students will convert measurements in their floor plan to the metric system.
-Students will exchange floor plan drawings with peers from ePal.
-Students will convert peers drawing to US Customary measurements.
-Students will discuss similarities and differences of their room design and contents with pen pals. Together the pen pals will design a new “dream” room.
Informal Outcome Assessments
-Students will create a floor plan and convert measurements.
-Students will journal with their peer pen pals about similarities and differences found.
-Students will write a reflection in the discussion posted in the LMS, Schoology.
